Mrs. Mary Ellen Newell, 82, an Otterbein homemaker, died at 7:40 a. m. Tuesday, July 29, in Otterbein Care Center. She was born March 10, 1904, in Nashville, Ind. She moved to Benton County as a child, was reared and educated in the Templeton area and moved to Otterbein in 1951. She was married in 1920 to Jay Newell. They farmed in the Templeton area for many years before his death in 1941. She was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church. Surviving are three sons, James "De" Newell, Lafayette; Harold "Bud" Newell, New Albany, Miss., and Larry Newell, San Angelo, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Claude (Betty) Flynn, Bullhead City, Ariz.; Mrs. Robert (Carmen) Roudebush, Otterbein, and Mrs. Richard (Helen) Christopher, Otterbein; a stepson, Jack Newell, and one stepdaughter, Mary Mahoney, both of Attica; a brother, George Sturgeon, Oxford; 18 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A son, five sisters, three brothers and three grandchildren also preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a. m. today (Friday) at the Otterbein United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Scott officiating. Burial was in Boswell Cemetery. Steely Funeral Home, Otterbein, was in charge of arrangements. Those so desiring may contribute in memoriam to the Otterbein Community Ambulance Service.
